Seriously. Your character is not a therapist. Or a philosopher. Or a walking dictionary.

They’re a person. At least, you want them to sound like a person.

Their internal monologue does need to run through the entire book. It does need to give context to the events and tell your readers who they are and what they’re thinking and why.

But if it’s too on-the-nose, they’ll sound…

Completely inhuman.
